It is amazing how big a role brand loyalty plays in what cars people buy. Usually, they get in the habit of buying one model or another, and stick with it for as long as they can. Although the quality of car that a company makes changes from year to year and model to model, nonetheless it will continue to have the same loyal and dedicated fans that it has always had. If you don't use a car buyers guide, or some other objective source to help you pick out the best make and model for your needs, you can end up with a substandard car just because you are used to buying cars from that company. Trust me I know. It has happened to me before.
Of course, not every cars buyers guide is the same. You have to be careful which one you are looking at, because if you get the wrong car buyers guide, it might lead you down the wrong path. In fact, I have heard that some of the car value guides are actually made by the auto companies! They may look convincing, as if they were actually reviews of the different kinds of cars honestly evaluating which ones are the best, but they are really just a sham. They exist to try to convince you to buy whatever particular car that company is selling. Unless you know where your car buyers guide is coming from, you should not trust it. It could mean trouble if you do.

The complaint ... about modern steel furniture, modern glass houses, modern red bars and modern streamlined trains and cars is that all these objets modernes, while adequate and amusing in themselves, tend to make the people who use them look dated. It is an honest criticism. The human race has done nothing much about changing its own appearance to conform to the form and texture of its appurtenances.

The best way to figure out if an auto buyers guide can be trusted is to compare it to other ones. If your car buyers guide tends to agree with the other ones on most matters, you can probably trust it. If it is way off the mark, however, you should probably get a different car buyers guide.
You probably have to worry less about used car buyers guides. The car companies do not care that much what kind of used car you buy, as they are not making money on the sale. They tend not to waste their time making a used car buyers guide. This means that you can probably not worry about whether or not you are getting good information. The chances are that you are. Of course, for used cars, you should probably get the opinion of your mechanic. They tend to know a lot about which cars last and which do not.
