Though I have never been in a serious auto accident, I have been in one that may have been serious had things been just a little different. I consider myself lucky, and I hope this is nothing that I ever have to go through, and I hope no one in my family has that sort of bad luck either. No one wants to go through an auto accident; you have to know it is a possibility. I worry about them the most in winter. We live in an area where everyone thinks they can handle the snow, and they go racing through it as if they were invincible. They are often proven wrong.
It seemed there was a rash of accidents when I was a teenager. I lived in a very small town, and our graduating classes averaged less than hundred students each year. Everyone pretty much knew everyone else, and this wasn’t just restricted to those in your class. It seemed that every year there was at least one deadly auto accident, and it was always fatal. The saddest part was that each auto accident seemed to be related to drinking. There was nothing else to do in our town, so everyone drank. A lot of people in my school died because of it.

Automobiles are free of egotism, passion, prejudice and stupid ideas about where to have dinner. They are, literally, selfless. A world designed for automobiles instead of people would have wider streets, larger dining rooms, fewer stairs to climb and no smelly, dangerous subway stations.

I can’t say I was any better. Though I didn’t drive, I did ride around with those who had done so. I was not what you would call a stupid person either. Teenagers know the risks of an auto accident but they just don’t think it can happen to them. I just never thought I was at risk, and I was lucky that the only auto accident I was in was very minor, and equally lucky in that no one got hurt. Icy roads were to blame for that accident, and thankfully no one had been drinking.
If you worry about your children being involved in an auto accident, you have a right to worry. The smartest teens in the world make some poor choices. That is all a part of growing up. You have to warn them of the dangers of drinking and being in a car, and you have to let them know that an auto accident can happen at any time. This may not be enough though, and that means you have to make sure you know where your children are and what they are doing at all times. This might mean making them stay home when their friends are out. They may say they hate you for it, but it’s all part of being a good parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad child to a dead child.
